FAQs

Absorbance 96

Wavelength/Filters

Is the Absorbance 96 capable of a readout in the UV range?

No. The Absorbance 96 is a filter-based reader offering 4 discrete wavelengths in the range of 400 nm to 1000 nm.

Can I exchange the filters?

You cannot exchange the filters yourself.  However, the possibility of a filter exchange can be booked as part of our Care Packages.

Can I order extra filters?

No, you cannot. The Absorbance 96 comes with four fixed filters.

Is it possible to customize the wavelength combination?

Yes. You are free to choose a wavelength combination in the range of 400–1000 nm which best suits your assays.

Is there a charge for customized wavelength combinations?

No, the customization itself comes at no extra cost. It may, however, increase the delivery time. If you need detailed information, just contact us.

Proper Use

Is an installation or setup by a technician necessary?

No. You must simply unbox the device, install the software, and the reader is ready to go within a few minutes.

Does the Absorbance 96 need to be maintained or serviced by a technician?

No, the Absorbance 96 is maintenance free.

How is the microplate inserted into the reader? Is there a tray?

You can insert the plate manually, i.e., by hand, into the reader. There is no sliding/automatic tray system.

Can a readout be performed with a lid on the micro plate?

No.

Which plate types can be used in the Absorbance 96?

The Absorbance 96 is designed to read 96-well microplates. All plates adhering to the ANSI standards should work with the device.

Can I use U-bottom or V-bottom plates?

Best results are obtained using flat-bottom plates. Our internal tests with U-bottom plates show the same performance with clear samples as compared to flat-bottom plates and can be recommend. If you plan to use V-bottom plates, you need to validate the performance of the reader-plate combination prior usage.

Is the Absorbance 96 robust enough for transport?

Yes. One of the main advantages of the Absorbance 96 is its robustness. In combination with its small size, these features make the Absorbance 96 highly portable.

How do I perform a calibration of the Absorbance 96?

The Absorbance 96 has many self-checks built in and does not need to be regularly checked for accuracy. However, we are aware that certain laboratory certifications require measurement devices to be regularly calibrated. For this purpose, we recommend the calibration plates from Hellma or our Care Packages, which offer a manufacturer calibration and corresponding certificate.

Is IQ/OQ/PQ Documentation available for the Absorbance 96?

Yes, there is IQ/OQ/PQ Documentation available. Please contact us.

Can the Absorbance 96 be disinfected for sterile usage?

Yes. The Absorbance 96 can be disinfected using a cloth moistened with 70 % Ethanol solution.

Features/Performance

Can I measure fluorescence or luminescence with the Absorbance 96?

No. The Absorbance 96 is designed for absorbance (OD) measurements and is not suited to read luminescence or fluorescence. But let’s see what the future brings – if you want to stay in contact and be one of the first to hear about upcoming products and innovations, subscribe to our newsletter.

Does the Absorbance 96 offer plate-shaking?

No. However, Byonoy offers an adapter that can be used to place the Absorbance 96 on certain shakers. For more information contact us.

Does the Absorbance 96 offer temperature control?

No.

Can I place the Absorbance 96 in an incubator?

Yes, you can place the Absorbance 96 into an incubator. Since only one USB cable is used for power and data transfer, most incubators are suited for this purpose. Please ensure you adhere to the specifications for humidity and temperature.

Can I use the Absorbance 96 in an anaerobic chamber or glove box?

Yes, this is possible and encouraged! Thanks to its small size, the Absorbance 96 fits into space-restricted enclosures easily and offers multiple wavelengths to enable a range of assays to be performed. Many of our customers use the device in this fashion.

Is the open slot design susceptible to dust?

Under laboratory condition, only minimal dust exposure is expected to enter the slot, which will be factored out during the initialization procedure. Beyond that, the Absorbance 96 has an internal dust detection, which will warn you if too much dust is detected, thereby preventing any false results. If needed, you have the option to open the reader for a cleaning procedure.

Can ambient light disturb the read out?

Byonoy’s patent-pending ambient light canceling technology and advanced data processing enable the cancelation of the ambient light during the read out.

Is the Absorbance 96 verified/validated? Are there studies or comparisons with other readers?

The Absorbance 96 is being used by laboratory professionals across the world. Comparison data can be provided. If needed, just contact us.

Does the Absorbance 96 scan the microplate, i.e. have moving parts?

No, the Absorbance 96 is a robust, solid-state microplate reader, meaning it has no scanning mechanism. All wells are therefore read simultaneously without the need to move the plate during the readout. This technology offers you a very fast readout in under 5 seconds and prevents spillage.

Absorbance One

Wavelength/Filters

Can the Absorbance One measure at multiple wavelengths?

No. The Absorbance One is a filter-based, single beam, single-wavelength UV/Vis spectrophotometer. It does not have a monochromator. Each device has a single channel and can offer one specific wavelength, tailored to your application. Examples would be 600 nm for OD600 or 562 nm for BCA. If you need more than one wavelength, our concept of compact size and affordable price makes it possible to buy more than one perfectly tailored instrument for your specific applications.

Can I exchange the filter?

The filter for the Absorbance One is not exchangeable. You must decide on the filter you need before purchasing the instrument. If you need more than one filter, our concept of compact size and affordable price makes it possible to buy multiple instruments for your specific applications.

Is it possible to customize the wavelength before ordering?

Yes. You are free to choose any wavelength between 280–1000 nm.

Do different wavelengths cost different amounts?

Yes. UV wavelengths, such as 280 or 340 nm, cost slightly more than those in the visible spectrum. For more information get a quote.
